Canadian Sport Institute Ontario (CSIO) is proud to recognize cross country skiers Graham Ritchie and Pierre Grall-Johnson as the OHPSI Athletes of the Month. Graham and Pierre finished first and third respectively in the Canadian Trials in January and will represent Canada at the U23 Cross-Country World Ski Championships taking place in Oberwiesenthal, Germany.
For Graham, it was his first national Noram circuit win. Pierre finished third in the final after setting the fastest time of the day in sprint qualifying. Pierre has been a standout on the Noram circuit this season, setting the fastest qualifying time in three straight national sprint events.
Graham qualified for the World Championships on the criteria of his first-place finish in the U23 sprint skate race at Canadian Trials. Pierre was selected to represent Canada on recommendation and consultation with Nordiq Canada’s High Performance Manager, NST coach and their Selection Committee after strong performances throughout the season.
Graham and Pierre train together out of the National Team Development Centre in Thunder Bay, ON.
Both Graham and Pierre are OHPSI identified athletes receiving sport science support from Canadian Sport Institute Ontario. One of the primary services they receive from CSIO is physiology support including physical testing and monitoring of their yearly training programs. This includes providing individual training zones through metabolic testing to monitor their aerobic, anaerobic fitness, and max aerobic speed throughout different phases of training. Graham and Pierre are also monitored for anthropometric measures throughout the season to track changes specific to their strength & conditioning and nutrition goals. In competition, CSIO staff have worked closely with the athletes on their hydration and recovery plans. The skiers have also received individual and team mental performance support focused on high performance behaviours.
