Canadian Sport Institute Ontario (CSIO) is proud to recognize Ian Holmquist as the OHPSI Athlete of the Month. Ian was recently crowned as the inaugural National Final Champion (Male) of RBC Training Ground.
Growing up Ian played hockey and soccer but did not begin rowing until 2016, after his Grade 11 Phys-ed teacher encouraged him to test for the sport. He hit the Rowing Canada testing targets and was invited into Rowing Canada’s NextGen Training Hub at Trent University / Peterborough Rowing Club, coached and lead by former rowing Olympian, Carol Love.
Ian has had success on the water in recent years, including placing 3rd at the Canadian Indoor Rowing U19 Championships in 2018 and 4th at the Canadian Indoor Rowing U23 Championships in 2019. He was also part of the Men’s U23 Quad who came in first place at the Royal Canadian Henley Regatta this past summer.
As an identified athlete through CSIO’s Ontario High Performance Sport Initiative (OHPSI), Ian has access to sport science and sport medicine support. This includes physiology support for both on water and in gym training direction, nutrition support focussed on fuelling and hydrating for training and competition, and biomechanical support such as stroke profile analysis.
Ian was no stranger to RBC Training Ground, first competing in the Toronto Final in 2017. Looking to see how he has improved, Ian took part in the 2019 Toronto Qualifier which landed him an invitation to the National Final. As the winner of RBC Training Ground, Ian will receive funding and resources to continue his training as a rower, with the aim of earning an Olympic spot in the future.
Currently studying as a Chemical Physics major at Trent University, Ian is also part of the varsity rowing team where he is coached by Ugette Vanderpost.
