This month, CSIO has nominated Aaliyah Edwards as the OHPSI Athlete of the Month. Aaliyah is hard working, passionate, and goal oriented. Due to her strong commitment and determination, she has shown incremental improvement in her sport.
Aaliyah was selected by Canada Basketball to participate in the Fifth Annual National Basketball Association (NBA) and International Basketball Federation (FIBA) Basketball Without Borders (BWB) Global Camp. Twenty-one countries were represented, and each player who attended the camp was selected based on their outstanding basketball skills and leadership abilities. Aaliyah took home MVP honours after she led her team to the BWB Global Girls Championship.
Aaliyah is best known as a role model in the Ontario Basketball Pathway in alignment with Canada Basketball. Aaliyah is a seasoned athlete who loves sports, including basketball for her mother and track for her father.
At the age of 13, Aaliyah played for the U14 squad with the Kingston Impact Basketball Club and was identified by Ontario Basketball. She joined the OSSP program in the summer and competed in the U14 Summer Games. In 2015, Aaliyah made the U15 (B Team) Ontario Squad. One year later, she was selected for the U15 Team Ontario and was named MVP at Nationals.
In 2017, Aaliyah was invited to participate in the Targeted Athlete Strategy (TAS) national program. This program provides athletes with an individual training program to maximize long-term development in four core areas of development: basketball skills and concepts, physical development, mental/social/emotional development, and professional playing career at an international level.
Aaliyah trains at CSIO twice a week and receives support in strength and conditioning, nutrition, and prehabilitation. Staff from Ontario Basketball and Canada Basketball visit Aaliyah at school to help her with her Individual Pathway Plan (IPP) and monitor her progress. Aaliyah has already attended four pods during the year (all TAS athletes practice and complete the Gold Medal concepts, testing related to Canada Basketball, video analysis, and mental and nutrition sessions).
With her family’s support, Aaliyah made the decision to enter the Ontario Scholastic Basketball Association (OSBA) with Crestwood Academy in October 2018. OSBA integrates and supports TAS athletes’ needs in daily training and competition environment based on periodization. Aaliyah is also an academic honor in her school.
