Saturday, December 22, 2018

LAUSANNE, Switzerland – Kayla Sanchez from Swimming Canada’s High Performance Centre-Ontario, continued her European rampage this week with a five medal performance at the Lausanne Cup short course meet which ended Friday.

Sanchez collected two gold medals, two silver and a bronze in addition to a national record to lead a 16-medal Canadian bonanza. She won five gold medals on the weekend at the English Nationals in Sheffield.

The 17-year-old posted wins in the 100-m individual medley (57.80) and 100-m freestyle (51.68), silver in the 50-m freestyle (24.20) and 200-m freestyle (1:52.59) and bronze in the 50-m breaststroke (31.46). Her time in the 100-m free was a Canadian short course record and a meet record.

It was also a strong meet for Canada’s 2016 quadruple Olympic medallist Penny Oleksiak. She won the 100-m butterfly in 57.34, was second in the 50-m fly (25,53) and third in the 100-m freestyle (52.60), just behind Sanchez and ahead of Taylor Ruck of Kelowna, B.C., who was fourth.

Ruck, who won a record eight medals at the Commonwealth Games this past spring, also collected a medal of each colour. She won the 100-m backstroke in 57.26 with Hanna Henderson of Etobicoke, Ont., third in 1:00.02; was second in the 200-m backstroke in 2:04.19 and third in the 200-m freestyle (1:54.60).

Not to be outdone was Kierra Smith of Kelowna with a win in the 200-m breaststroke in 2:20.13 and a bronze in the 50-m breaststroke in 30.66.

Mack Darragh of Oakville, Ont, highlighted the Canadian men’s side with silver in the 400-m IM in 4:15.14 and Yuri Kisil of Calgary collected bronze medals in 50-m freestyle and 100-m freestyle in 21.66 and 47.64.
