Canada Scores Big On Opening day of Wrestling Pan-American Championships

Monday, April 8, 2013

(Panama City, PAN) - Reigning World Champion Jessica MacDonald, Justine Bouchard and Stacie Anaka all won gold medals for the Canadian Wrestling Team on the opening day of the 2013 FILA Pan-American Championships in Panama City, adding to their sport resume the title of Pan-American Champion.

In the 51 kg weight class, MacDonald was a clear favorite of the event entering the tournament as the reigning World Champion. She quickly demonstrated why she holds that title, and throughout the day won seven of the eight contested bouts, conceding only one single point to her opponents.

Justine Bouchard had an equally solid day on her way to the top of the podium, winning her first bout by technical superiority and her second by fall. In the decisive match for gold, Bouchard took the victory in the match in a tightly contested duel that lasted three bouts against a fierce competitor in Vidiaux Lopez of Cuba.

Stacie Anaka had a smaller but stellar day on the mat in the 67 kg category. Anaka competed in three matches, and finished the day on a perfect note, without allowing any point to her opponents. Anaka defeated her Dominican counterpart (1-0, 3-1), and then moved on to the gold medal match by defeating Julia Salata of the United States (2-0,-1-0) in the semi-finals. In the ultimate match of the day, facing Colombia, it took Anaka only two bouts (2-0, 2-0) to win the gold.

Erica Weibe (72kg) and Braxton Papadopoulos (59kg) both took bronze medals in their respective weight class. Jillian Gallays (55kg) won her opening duel, but lost her second match and placed seventh overall.

The team, headed by Head Coach Leigh Vierling, won medals in six of the seven weight classes, showing the depth of talent in women’s wrestling.

The men’s team is in action today. Results will be posted on www.wrestling.ca and http://fila-official.com throughout the day.
