Canada’s Top Sport Reps Gather in Calgary for 6th Annual Own the Podium SPIN Summit

Friday, September 13, 2013

A record number of more than 300 of Canada’s top sport scientists, researchers, medical professionals, executives and coaches will gather in Calgary for the sixth-annual Own the Podium SPIN Summit, September 16-18, 2013 at WinSport’s Markin MacPhail Centre.

Reflecting on London 2012, and pushing ahead in full force towards Sochi 2014, the entire high-performance sport community will collaborate in Calgary with a common goal - to sustain and expand the nation’s opportunities for podium performances.

Designed to merge the art of coaching with the science of sport in an effort to push the limits of performance at the Olympic and Paralympic Games, the Sport Innovation Summit is Canada’s cutting-edge symposium for professional development and networking in the areas of applied sport science, sport medicine, and innovation.

Media are invited to attend the conference’s keynote presentations, September 18, that will be delivered by one of Canada’s most successful athlete-coach teams - five-time Paralympic medallist, Michelle Stillwell and her coach, Peter Lawless. Stillwell is Canada’s only female Paralympian to win a gold medal in two sports. After winning the gold at the 2000 Paralympic Summer Games with Canada’s wheelchair basketball squad, Stillwell went on to rack up three more gold, and one silver medal, in Paralympic athletics events at the 2008 and 2012 Games.

Media are also encouraged to join conference participants for the Dr. Gord Sleivert Young Investigator Awards and social on September 17 at Canada’s Sports Hall of Fame in Calgary. More than 55 abstracts focused on new high-performance sport training methodologies, nutritional protocols, performance analysis, coaching, equipment designs, injury prevention, and innovations in recovery and regeneration, were submitted to SPIN Summit organizers with the goal of winning one of three $1,000 educational grants.

Six students will make short presentations to the conference attendees with Dr. Sleivert’s wife, Kari, making the official presentation to the three winners. Designed to recognize students committed to a career in sports medicine, science and innovation, the award was created in honour of Dr. Gord Sleivert who passed away suddenly in 2012 while working with Swimming Canada at the Olympic and Paralympic trials in Montreal.

SPIN 2013 will also include workshops focused on health care, athlete preparation techniques to enhance medical monitoring and performance assessment, sessions in sport innovation, along with professional skill development and networking.
